The north entrance of Zion, Kolob Canyon, is a mere 20 minutes south of Cedar City, just off highway 15.

Sliver Reef is the only known place in the United States where commercial deposits of silver ore are found in a sandstone formation. To the west of the parking lot is a trail head that offers a beautiful hike through a narrow canyon with towering red rock walls and will lead you to several pools of water.

Facilities: There are 10 overnight camping sites, and a picnic area next to the creek. Water, picnic tables, and vault toilets are available. Overnight camping is $8.00/day, day-use $2.00/vehicle.

These tracks, along with hundreds of fossil fish, plants, rare dinosaur remains, invertebrates traces and important sedimentary structures, show evidence that this site was produced along the western edge of a large, Early Jurassic (age between 195-198 million years ago) freshwater lake named Lake Dixie. The site can provide research opportunities to undergraduate students in earth sciences. Contact Andrew Milner, the city paleontologist and site curator, for more information: amilner@sgcity.org
