The SUU Business Resource Center (BRC) is approaching it's 10-year anniversary. This program, which is funded by the Small Business Administration, has made it possible for SUU to expand the exposure of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), located in the heart of Cedar City's Downtown District, and to continue offering small business consulting services free of charge. Craig Isom is the Executive Director of the Business Resource Center (BRC) and the principal investigator on the grant.

Opening in October 2004, the BRC is a one-stop-shop that assists start-up and existing businesses with the planning and successful execution of business strategies. The SBDC is the key partner in the BRC programs offered, including one-on-one counseling to assist small business owners in the region with marketing, planning, loan application preparation and developing competitive business plans that take advantage of currently successful small business management practices.

The mission of the SBDC is to strengthen Utah’s economic fabric and quality of life by facilitating the success and prosperity of small business endeavors. One way the local SBDC has practiced this mission is through the Best Business Idea Competition which is in its eighth year and offering creative entrepreneurs $10,000 in prizes. Steven Walquist and Sterling Holmes took first place and a $5,000 prize this past January with their idea for Axis Array, a patented universal solar panel mount.

Seminars and lectures are available through the SBDC, drawing on the knowledge of the community’s business professionals in a variety of disciplines including ,marketing, business planning and finance.
