SUU Study Abroad Scholarships

SUU offers many scholarships for students who participate in study abroad programs coordinated through the Office of Learning Abroad. Students may apply for scholarships when they complete their study abroad application. Note that scholarship awards are not guaranteed and may fluctuate in value.

Short-term Faculty-led Study Abroad Program scholarships of $250 are offered for credit-bearing programs lasting more than eight days. Only SUU students are eligible. Not all applicants will receive a scholarship; funds are limited. Below are the types of scholarships available:

  • Priority Scholarship: for students who apply by the priority application deadline
  • Diversity Scholarship: for students of diverse backgrounds
  • First Generation Scholarship: for students whose parents/guardians did not complete a bachelor's degree
  • Military Veteran Scholarship: for students who served in the U.S. military
  • Native American Scholarship: for students who are members of an indigenous community in North America
  • Non-traditional Student Scholarship: for students who are over 25 years old and/or married, divorced, widowed, or a parent/guardian of dependent children
  • Douglas Merit Scholarship: for students with a GPA of at least 3.5
  • Paroiatnikova Need Scholarship: for students with demonstrated financial need
  • Smylie Engineering Scholarship: for Engineering majors

*Scholarships that cannot be combined with each other: Diversity, First Generation, Military, Native American, Non-traditional, Douglas, Paroitnikova, and Smylie.

Semester Exchange/Study Abroad scholarships vary in amount from $250-$1000. Only SUU students are eligible. Not all applicants will receive a scholarship; funds are limited. Below are the types of scholarships available:

  • 1+1=$2,000 Scholarship ($1000): for students who study abroad on one of our exchange programs for a semester or year with at least one friend
  • Country-specific Scholarship ($1000): for students who study on exchange to one of SUU's partner universities in Spring or Fall 2020 in the following countries:

       - China (Hunan Normal University or Northwest University)
       - Costa Rica (ULACIT)
       - Finland (Oulu University of Applied Sciences)
       - Germany (Hochschule Emden/Leer or Mannheim University)
       - Morocco (EGE Rabat)
       - Netherlands (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences or Fontys University of Applied Sciences)
       - Switzerland (University of Applied Sciences NW Switzerland)

  • Diversity Scholarship ($250): for students of diverse backgrounds
  • First Generation Scholarship ($250): for students whose parents/guardians did not complete a bachelor's degree
  • Military Veteran Scholarship ($250): for students who served in the U.S. military
  • Native American Scholarship ($250): for students who are members of an indigenous community in North America
  • Non-traditional Student Scholarship ($250): for students who are over 25 years old and/or married, divorced, widowed, or a parent/guardian of dependent children
  • Merit Scholarship ($750): for students with a GPA of at least 3.75
  • Need Scholarship ($750): for students with demonstrated financial need
  • Smylie Engineering Scholarship ($250): for Engineering majors

*Scholarships that cannot be combined with each other: (A) 1+1=$2000, Country-specific, Merit, and Need; and (B) Diversity, First Generation, Military, Native American, Non-traditional, and Smylie.

SUU departments, colleges, and programs may offer their own study abroad scholarships; students are encouraged to inquire with the appropriate academic unit.

Some of SUU's exchange partner universities offer special scholarships to SUU students:

  • FHWien University of Applied Sciences (Vienna, Austria): Ernst Mach Research Grant - 1050 euros/month
  • Hunan Normal University (Changsha, China): American Studies Center Program Coordinator (contact the SUU Office of Learning Abroad for details)
  • University of Jaen (Jaen, Spain):

       - Sport Grant - 1800 euros/two semesters
       - Teaching Practice Program CEALM - 150 euros/month

  • University of Applied Sciences NW Switzerland (Olten, Switzerland): Exchange Partner Scholarship - 420 Swiss francs/month
