Scott L Wyatt Named President of Southern Utah University
SUU President Scott L Wyatt

The State Board of Regents selected Scott L Wyatt as the 16th President of Southern Utah University. President Wyatt, who is currently leading Snow College, will succeed Interim President Richard Kendell who was named to the position when Michael T. Benson was appointed president of Eastern Kentucky University in April of this year.

A 21-member Presidential Search Committee, chaired by Regent Mark Stoddard with Vice Chair Trustee Eric Leavitt, conducted a national search and considered nearly 70 potential candidates.  The four finalists met with constituent groups on Thursday, November 21, and were interviewed by the Board of Regents on Friday, November 22.

"We are pleased with the caliber of the candidates who participated in this rigorous process," said Bonnie Jean Beesley, Chair of the Board of Regents. "President Wyatt has expertly guided Snow College through enrollment and budget challenges to become a nationally ranked institution. We are confident that he will bring this same level of leadership to SUU and to the Utah System of Higher Education as a whole."

Thunderbirds Announce New Gymnastics Alliance
Coach Scott Bauman

Southern Utah University Gymnastics has announced a new gymnastics alliance, joining Utah State, Boise State, Denver and Brigham Young in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championship. The group will look at becoming the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference in 2014-15 when the league is anticipated to be fully recognized by the NCAA.

"This will be a great opportunity for us moving forward to be closely associated with these programs," head coach Scott Bauman said of the alignment. "This conference has the chance to be one of the most competitive in the nation and we expect to see each of the teams in the top-25 when things are all said and done."

SUU is familiar with each conference foe as the Thunderbirds have faced USU, BSU and Denver in the Western Athletic Conference each of the past two seasons. The T-Birds also have a long history with BYU, facing the Cougars at least once each season since the 1989 campaign.

Southern Utah will open its 2014 season on Jan. 6, hosting its annual Red/White preview at 7:00 p.m. in the Centrum Arena.
