A lot has happened on campus since May's News from the Nest, most notably the naming of a new interim president. We are excited to welcome President Rich Kendell to campus later this summer and invite you to learn about him by reading the article below and watching the YouTube video about his life that was produced for an honor he received in 2009.
Other exciting news you can read about is the fast-approaching Alumni Days at Shakespeare June 24-26, a new aviation program set to launch this fall, and SUU Track standout Nate Jewkes competes at the NCAA National Meet later this week.

Regents Appoint Rich Kendell as SUU Interim President
Rich Kendell One of Utah's most honored and distinguished educators has been selected as Southern Utah University's interim president. Former commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) Rich Kendell is replacing outgoing President Michael T. Benson, who has taken a new job at Eastern Kentucky University.
Over an incredible educational career, Kendell has been recognized as one of the best in both public and higher education. During his ten years as superintendent of the Davis School District he was named the Utah Superintendent of the year and was a four-time National Superintendent of the Year finalist. He was also tabbed as the Utah Education Association's Administrator of the Year.
Kendell's remarkable career ranges from being an English teacher at Ogden High School to being an associate dean of two different schools at the University of Utah, with many positions in between.  Rich was a research analyst for USHE some 30 years ago and then moved over to the U. to help lead the graduate school, the school of education, and later became the acting chair of the Department of Leadership and Policy.

SUU Academics Take Flight with New Pilot Program
Helicopter 2 Southern Utah University academics will take to the air this fall when the University opens a new aviation program through a partnership with private aviation company Upper Limit Aviation (ULA). The Utah State Board of Regents approved the new associate of applied science degree in aerospace/aviation technology on Friday, April 17.

Offering instruction for professional pilot licensure on rotor-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, the program will provide theory-and application-based courses in aviation meteorology, aerodynamics, safety and instrument procedures for both helicopter and fixed-wing pilot training. Both the rotor-wing and fixed-wing pilot tracks will share a common core of general education and general aviation courses, as well as specialized flight labs involving simulators and aircraft, housed at the Cedar City Regional Airport.

"Students will be able to experience more through this program then they could anywhere else," explained ULA Vice President and SUU alumnus Gordon Birch ('93), who was largely instrumental in bringing the program to SUU.

Nate Jewkes Headed to NCAA National Championships

Jewkes, Nate Southern Utah University's Nate Jewkes will compete at this week's NCAA National Championship, after a sixth-place qualifying time of 30:07.04 in the 10k at the NCAA first round, hosted by the University of Texas.

This berth marks the second consecutive year SUU will be represented in the event after All-American Cam Levins ('12) won the race in 2012. Jewkes entered the NCAA first round race ranked No. 7 in the West and needed to finish in the top 12 to clinch a spot in the national championships. He will now compete in Eugene, Ore., at 6:15 p.m. (MST) this Thursday, June 6.

Good luck Nate!
