Aircraft Maintenance Technician Program

Aviation Maintenance Technician working on a helicopter

Aircraft mechanics are in high-demand around the world. With SUU you can become an aircraft mechanic (also known as A&P Mechanic or Aircraft Maintenance Technician) in under two years. SUU’s program is currently the most up-to-date in the country because it is based off of upcoming brand new standards and FAA regulations.

SUU is one of the only, if not the only, schools to offer helicopter maintenance as part of the standard curriculum at no additional cost. Helicopter maintenance is a bit more advanced than airplane maintenance and gives graduates an edge in competing for jobs.

What do Aviation Maintenance Technicians do?

Aviation maintenance technicians (AMT’s) are the professionals who fix and maintain aircraft.

AMT’s repair and service nearly every part and system of an aircraft, including landing gear, aircraft structure and engine systems.

AMT’s are also called A&P mechanics because of their airframe and power plant certifications. AMT’s are in high demand and make a higher return on their education investment than pilots, doctors and lawyers. AMT’s have great career options, and can work in most countries around the world. Now is the perfect time to become an AMT because there are currently more open positions than there have ever been, and this demand is expected to grow even higher in coming years.

Details about the program:

The program is about 18 months long. When you graduate you will be eligible for your Airframe and Power plant (A&P) Certifications, which allow you to work on aircraft in most countries around the world. You’ll also have an accredited associate’s degree from SUU, which will give you an edge in getting competitive jobs.  Should you later decide to continue your education at SUU, you’ll be close to earning a bachelor’s degree in aviation maintenance management.

Length: 18 months

Upon Graduation:

  • Airframe and Power plant (A&P) Certifications
  • Associate’s Degree

How to become an AMT at Southern Utah University

First, you’ll need to apply and be admitted into Southern Utah University. An admissions specialist will help you through the process of turning in your high school or college transcripts. You will need at least a 2.0 GPA to be admitted to the university.

Next, you’ll need to sign up for classes and get tools and supplies. Information will be provided to you once you’re admitted, but if you would like to know more before then, you can email us at aviation@suu.edu or call 435-586-7862.

The next step is to attend the program. The program is five consecutive semesters and includes helicopter maintenance within the standard curriculum at no additional cost. To our knowledge, this is something no other program in the country offers.

Finally, you’ll graduate and get your first job. Most aircraft mechanic graduates go to work for airlines, repair stations or general aviation operations. However, A&P mechanics are also recruited to work in theme parks and infrastructure. Our program director, Jared Britt, says that an entire graduating class at his A&P school was offered a job at Disney.
