Professional Pilot Program

As a part 61 flight school SUU will uniquely prepare you for a career flying helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft anywhere in the world.

Southern Utah University presents an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) as well as a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree and Bachelor of Science in General Studies (BSGS) degrees with choice of Rotor Wing Pilot (helicopter) or Fixed Wing Pilot (airplane) components. These tracks share a common core of general education and general aviation core courses. Our specialized flight labs, located at the Cedar City, Utah Airport (CDC), include state-of-the-art aircraft that will get you off the ground in no time.

SUU provides all flight labs for the helicopter and airplane training courses. We offer helicopter and airplane courses in; Private Helicopter Pilot, Private Airplane Pilot, Instrument Rating, Commercial Helicopter Pilot, Commercial Airplane Pilot, Certified Flight Instructor, and Certified Flight Instructor Instrument.

Additional Special Curriculum courses are offered in the following: Turbine Transition, External Load, Mountain Flying, Robinson R44 Transition, Robinson R22 Transition, SFAR 73 Transition, and both Single Engine and Multi Engine fixed wing training.

This collaborative approach is extremely important when it comes to flight training and career placement. It means more hands-on flight training experience combined with the personal mentorship of the best helicopter trainers in the aviation industry. Due to the intimate nature of the program our students graduate ready for a career in aviation.

Students interested in the SUU AAS or BIS degree in Aviation should: 

  • Submitting an Aviation Program admission application to SUU
  • Paying the $50 application fee
  • Submitting high school transcript or G.E.D. scores
  • Submitting official college transcripts for all colleges and universities attended
  • Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid online at www.fafsa.ed.gov/ (Include SUU, school code 0036478, on the application)
  • Military veterans should apply for benefits online at www.gibill.va.gov

Students will be required to take Accuplacer tests for math and English courses prior to registration for those courses, unless transferring credits from another accredited institution. The SUU test may be taken on the SUU campus or on another campus with authorization from the SUU Testing Center.
