90 Second Business Pitch Competition Rules

  • Competition is open to Iron County high school students.
  • Applicants may enter individually or in groups, but only one entry per person. No person may participate in the presentation of more than one idea.
  • Contestants must be available on April 13, 2018, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm to participate in person.
  • Applicants must submit a summary of no more than 500 words on or before 5:00 PM April 2, 2018.
  • Summaries will be submitted to Holly Jolley, BU 320, or Sponsors are not responsible misdirected entries.
  • Applicants will be pre-screened to have no more than 20 ideas competing in the 90 Second Pitch Competition event on April 13, 2018.
  • Applicants will be notified by April 6, 2018, if they will be participating in the 90 second competition.
  • SUU Entrepreneurship Club members are eligible to compete but will not participate in screening their own ideas.
  • Applicants will be notified by February 12, 2018, if they will be participating in the 90 second competition.
  • Contestants can have props or handouts but must be able to set up additional materials for their presentation in one minute or less.
  • Each team or contestant may have 1 slide with no video or animations that must be submitted by email or shared through Google Drive to Holly Jolley before 8:00 AM, April 13, 2018.
  • Contestants will have exactly 90 seconds to pitch.
  • Once 90 seconds is reached, contestants will be allowed to finish their sentence or thought. Any continuation past that and judges will be instructed to disqualify.
  • Judges may ask each contestant/team questions
  • The judging criteria for the competition will be rated on a scale from 1-10 based on the following:
    1. Is there a strong need for this product or service?
    2. Can the idea be profitable in this business quickly?
    3. Does the contestant have the ability to execute the idea?
    4. Is the presentation professional and delivered with charisma?
  • In the event of a tie, judges will confer to decide the winner.
  • Monetary awards for the top 4 pitches: 1st - $400, 2nd - $300, 3rd - $200, 4th – $100
  • Certificates will be presented at the end of the competition.
  • Checks will be awarded by May 1, 2018.
  • SUU Director of Entrepreneurship reserves the right to change rules as necessary.

SUU assumes all participants and spectators in this contest agree to implied non-disclosure. Proprietary concepts and intellectual property may be protected by a provisional patent or copyright, should the contestant desire. Contestants in this contest will not be penalized for withholding key concepts or intellectual property associated with their business idea.
