Astrophotography at Cathedral Gorge

Do you love southern Utah’s landscape and beautiful night skies? Do you have an interest in photography and in furthering your skills by learning nighttime photography? If yes, this class is for you.

During a new moon period, learn how to successfully shoot stars at the magnificent Cathedral Gorge State Park. Also enhance your photo editing skills during a classroom session in an SUU photo lab.

Bring your own DSLR camera (no camera phones), tripod, shutter line, flashlight, warm clothing, food and water. Transportation is not provided.

This two-week class meets on one Friday, September 27 from 5:30-7:30 pm at SUU. Then on Saturday, September 28 from 8:00-11:00 pm at Cathedral Gorge. Lastly, class will end on Tuesday, October 1 from 5:30-7:30 pm at SUU. Registration deadline is September 26.

Instructor: Lijie Zhou

Instructor Bio

Dr. Lijie Zhou is a professor in the Communication Department at Southern Utah University. He teaches copy and layout design and astrophotography and his research focuses on visual communications and branding. He received an award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications for his research on the effects of visual elements on human behavior. Lijie is a landscape and night sky photographer and specializes in long exposure landscapes, HDR photography, and photo post production and editing.
