Tips for a Successful Cover Letter

General Tips

  • No longer than ½ a page to 1 page
  • Match the cover letter and resume in appearance
  • Do your research about the specific job and company you are applying for
  • Perk interest and seize the attention of the reader
  • Highlight what you can do for the company

First Paragraph

  • State the position that you are applying for
  • Mention how you heard about the opportunity
  • Seize attention: in a short bold sentence tell them exactly what you want (the position you are applying for and how you found the position)
  • Perk Interest: grab the attention of the reader by telling them how you got their name (include your referral's name if they know the manager)

Second Paragraph

  • Get down to business: Show why you are qualified for the job
  • Explain why you are interested in this position
  • State why you are qualified

Third Paragraph

  • Always end with your appreciation: Thank the employer for their time
  • Ask for an interview: Set a follow-up date or restate the current follow-up date
