Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: There is even more art in southern Utah when SUU’s Art Insights Series offers two diverse presentations in a single week. First, Native American photographer and Zion Artist-in-Residence Rick Braveheart shares his craft and experience on Tuesday, February 25th in SUU’s CN Room 229 at 7pm. Then on Thursday, February 27th at 7pm, graphic designer David Wolske, Creative Director of the Book Arts Program and Red Butte Press, offers insight into his field in the Gilbert Great Hall in SUU’s Hunter Conference Center. Admission is free to both presentations and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Rick Braveheart grew up in Western New York, where he was surrounded by great examples of nature; Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Niagara Falls, old-growth forests and dramatic winters and he learned at a young age an appreciation for nature’s beauty, deep respect for its power, and an understanding of the importance in caring for the earth. His interest in photography began as a teenager, borrowing the family’s camera to photograph nearby parks and forests on weekends. At 14, he learned to develop film and print black and white photographs from a friend’s father. After college, he worked for several decades as a management consultant, teacher, and authored several books. During those years, Braveheart was an active landscape photographer and on one occasion, when a publisher urgently needed photographs for an upcoming book, he supplied the images. Gradually, his images began appearing in calendars, books, websites and eventually in exhibitions thus allowing him to move into full-time commercial and fine art photography. As a Native American (Tuscarora), Rick Braveheart is guided by the principles of walking gently upon the earth and honoring the land, its people and creatures to help maintain harmony in Nature. In each photograph he shares the beauty of nature and of the earth. The more others can see and appreciate this beauty for themselves, the more they may come to realize the importance of helping to maintain it for future generations.

David Wolske is an Assistant Librarian (Lecturer) at the J. Willard Marriott Library, The University of Utah where he teaches Letterpress, Typography, and Book Design. He is also Creative Director for the Book Arts Program and Red Butte Press, both divisions of Special Collections at the Marriott Library. His work reveals an affinity for handset wood and metal type, but also enthusiastically incorporates digital tools, computer software, and design thinking into a manual workflow that draws heavily on the traditions of letterpress and fine art printmaking. David has received awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Type Director’s Club, New York, and the Society of Typographic Artists, Chicago, Illinois. His work has been published in Touch: the Vista Sans Project Book, Adventures in Letterpress, For the Love of Letterpress, The 2012 FPO (For Print Only) Awards, New Modernist Type, New Vintage Type and Uppercase Magazine. His books, broadsides, and prints are exhibited and held in collections nationally.

In conjunction with David Wolske’s Art Insights appearance, there will be an exhibition of his work in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery until Saturday, March 8th. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 7 pm. The exhibition is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work, insights, and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
