Born in Maryland, Chelsey Gillespie graduated from Orem High School in 2005 and completed her undergraduate degree accounting at USU. She worked several years as a cosmetologist before seeking a new career, began looking for a graduate program, attended a Graduate Red Riot in 2019 and fell in love with SUU, applying that same weekend.

Chelsey attended the SUU online campus in pursuit of her Master of Accountancy Degree, and while she had never before dreamed of becoming an accountant, she dove into a new adventure. “I thoroughly enjoyed the finance and reporting side of cosmetology, so I decided to pursue a degree in accounting,” she says.

SUU provided Chelsey with a way to achieve that dream while still working and raising her children. She says that the academic and practical knowledge she gained from college are invaluable to her career, and names Dr. David Christensen’s Accounting Ethics class as the source that reaffirmed her ethics and strengthened her moral courage. Arguably, however, her most important lessons were discovered outside of the classroom.

In true T-Bird fashion, she says, “I learned that I am resilient and capable of doing anything I put my mind to. I learned that I can do hard things! I started at SUU in January of 2020 and finished my degree in December of 2020, all during the year of a global pandemic.”

Today, Chelsey works at Uintah Basin Technical College in Roosevelt as a business operations manager, and her job consists of vital tasks such as supervising the accounting department, generating the annual financial report and statements with supporting schedules, preparing financial reports for the board of directors and Utah System of Higher Education, and more.

She and her spouse now live in Roosevelt with their three daughters. As a family, they enjoy hiking, camping, and kayaking. Chelsey also coaches the soccer team that her daughters play on, and she is the volunteer treasurer for the local region of the American Youth Soccer Organization.
