Dr. Julia Combs earned her PhD in English, with an emphasis in rhetoric and writing, from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Her research interests include the history of women’s rhetoric, as well as Renaissance and Medieval rhetoric and literature.

Dr. Combs is the Director of the Writing Center at Southern Utah University. She teaches Writing in the Sciences and all levels of writing classes. As the director of the Writing Center at Southern Utah University and the director of the newly established Writing Fellows program, she enjoys working closely with students and professors across the disciplines.

Her most recent research interests have taken her to Oxford University for two consecutive summers to present papers and publish about her current obsession: the writing of Dorothy Leigh, who published The Mother’s Blessing in 1616.

Dr. Combs has been married for over thirty years to Kenneth Combs, a trial lawyer. They are the parents of three children. She enjoys bike riding and recently completed a two-day, fifty-mile bike tour through the Cotswolds of England to see the William Tyndale monument. Her favorite hobbies include reading, visiting old churches in Europe, and studying the poetry of John Donne and George Herbert.
