Financial Aid & Scholarships

Applying for Financial Aid, 2016-17

1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

To be considered for Federal Financial Aid at Southern Utah University, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may complete a paper FAFSA, but for faster service complete the FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov, using your Department of Education FSA ID. REMEMBER, the FAFSA is free. You should never pay money to fill out the FAFSA. Please be sure to add SUU’s school code (003678) on the FAFSA, so we will receive the results and can determine your eligibility for aid.

2. Submit the Student Information Form

This form is required once from all students, so if you have already submitted it for a prior year you don't need to do it again.

3. If Selected for Verification:

Some students may be selected for verification by the Department of Education. If you are selected, we will contact you via letter or email to let you know what other documents we need.

You may click on the link below for the appropriate verification worksheet (highlighted in red), depending on whether you are Dependent or Independent for financial aid purposes.

If you were required to use your parents’ income information on your FAFSA, you will need to complete the Dependent Verification Worksheet. Otherwise, complete the Independent Verification Worksheet.

Complete all pages of the worksheet(s), print and sign it before submitting it to us.

We strongly encourage you to use the IRS Data Retrieval process when completing the FAFSA. If you did not use the IRS Data Retrieval option, and are selected for verification, you will need to request a 2015 IRS Tax Return Transcript for you and your parents (if Dependent) or spouse (if married). We can no longer accept paper tax forms (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ) as verification of income information.

Please do not submit the verification worksheet or tax transcripts unless we ask you to do so.

Potential for Conflicting Information

Because the same tax information is requested for both the 2016-17 and 2017-18 aid years, there is the potential for submitted information to conflict from one year to the next. If you report different financial information for 2016-17 than for 2017-18, the conflicts will have to be resolved before you can receive future aid for either year. In the event of conflicting information, the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships will contact you about resolving these conflicts.

Please direct questions to the Southern Utah University Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships at (435) 586-7735
