Prior Learning Assessment

Live, Work, Get Credit

The Graduate & Online School is pleased to offer the opportunity to earn SUU credit based on your professional experiences.* Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a course taught by a qualified SUU instructor. In the course, you create an e-portfolio which may translate your hard work into college credit.

PLA elective credits are upper-division, so they help you reach the required total for graduation. GOSC 3920 is a rigorous course resulting in a deliverable that reflects both the value of your experience, and your understanding of how that experience connects academically to your educational pursuit.

Prior Learning Assessment is available to any admitted SUU student. One to fifteen credits toward your SUU bachelor’s degree is possible.**

Here’s How It Works

Register and pay for GOSC 3920, a six week, one credit course. Total cost of the course and first credit is $279. Within the course, week one is used to create a proposal for credit. You then spend five weeks building and refining an e-portfolio, your final project. Once project is approved, the additional credits to reach your maximum allowed amount cost $49 each.

Overall, PLA credit is a fraction of the cost to take regular SUU classes. Depending on the number of credits, savings is approximately 80%.

PLA-based credit is not financial aid eligible and does not count toward the total credits needed to qualify for financial aid.

Save Money!

The best part is, PLA credits are a bargain! For example, the cost of 6 PLA-based credits is: $524. The cost of taking regular classes for 6 elective credits is $2,033.75.

* While a tremendous opportunity to earn upper-division SUU elective credit in this manner, interested students need proper advising to measure for actual benefit and acceptance with your degree program. Too much elective credit is neither beneficial nor necessary. Through the process of taking GOSC 3920, a pass/fail course, the amount of credit a student may earn is ultimately determined by the faculty member, based on the e-portfolio. Please also note: PLA credit is only granted for original work. Transferred PLA credit from other institutions cannot be repeated at SUU. Credit-bearing certificates earned at SUU cannot be considered for additional PLA credits.

** The first course and $279 base fee grants the opportunity to earn up to nine credits. To earn an additional beyond the first amount requires taking a second course, with an additional $279 base fee.
