Darin Bird - Deputy Director, Utah Department of Natural Resources

Darin Bird

Darin Bird is currently serving as Deputy Director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources. This department is charged with the oversight of state parks, recreation, boating, wildlife, fishing, hunting, water, forestry, wildland fires suppression, geology, paleontology, watershed restoration and the permitting for oil, gas and mining projects in the state of Utah. In this capacity, he has served as a political appointee for four governors. Prior to this assignment, Darin served on the staff of U.S. Senator Robert Bennett in several roles, Senior Policy Advisor for the House Natural Resources Committee chaired by Congressman James Hansen and as Special Assistant and Director of Constituent Services for Utah Governor Norman Bangerter. Darin grew up in Cedar City and Santa Clara, Utah graduating from Dixie High School, Dixie College and Southern Utah University. While attending SUU Darin served as Student Body President, Chair of the Utah Council of Student Body Presidents and President of the Utah Student Association where he led a statewide effort to register over 30,000 student voters for the 1988 general election. He was also the recipient of the Male Contributor of the Year Award and the Thunderbird Special Recognition Award. In the community, he has served or is currently a member of the following groups: Murray Shade Tree and Beautification Commission, Red Butte Garden Board of Advisors, USDA Roadless Area Conservation National Advisory Council, This is the Place Heritage Park Board of Trustees, Sons of the Utah Pioneers Chapter Board, and was directly involved in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Darin was also the first recipient of the SUU Young Alumni Award. Darin is married to the former Lola Murray and he lives with his wife and daughter Lauren in Murray, Utah.
