Marketing Communication

Social Media Guidelines

The students, alumni, faculty, staff, clubs, departments and colleges who represent Thunderbird Nation are the heart and voice of our campus. We encourage you to share your experiences and comment freely about your work and play at SUU. YOU ARE SUU.

We ask simply that you maintain a respectful and professional tone when posting as a representative of our University. If we become aware of posts that are viewed as spam; are off-topic; constitute or encourage illegal activity; infringe upon someone’s rights; contain obscenities; or direct and target physical threats, we reserve the right to remove them. Our social pages exist to serve those affiliated with Southern Utah University.

Before creating your Southern Utah University account

Our students, fans, alumni and community are all best served if we are unified in content strategies and general posting guidelines through consistent language, best practices and graphics. Before opening a Southern Utah University-related account, please consult with Nikki Koontz, Marketing Communication's assistant director, to coordinate efforts and receive a complete copy of the University's social media guidelines, writing style guide and graphic standards manual.

Meanwhile, consider the following questions:

  • Are we staffed to maintain consistent communication, including responding to comments and messages?
  • What sort of content will we be sharing?
  • Who is our audience? How will it grow?
  • Will we be able to post year-round?
  • How can we work with existing SUU-affiliated accounts? Can we spread our message without creating similar accounts?
  • What platform will best serve our goals (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)?
