Students Encouraged to Vote in SUUSA PrimariesFebruary 27, 2012
The Southern Utah University Student Association (SUUSA) primary elections set for February 28-29, and on campus campaigning for the 2012-13 positions opened today.
To date, 45 students are vying for ground in the annual student government elections, comprised of 10 open positions. This week's primaries will narrow the candidate pool down to the top two contenders for each position: president, academic vice president, activities vice president and clubs and student leadership vice president, as well as senators for performing and visual arts, business, education, humanities and social science, science and graduate students.
Information about the candidates is available in the Student Center, where all six parties will maintain a presence early on in the week. The student-run SUU News has also created the "SUUSA Election Center" an unbiased online elections resource at suunews.com/elections/suusa/2012.
Additionally, a debate between candidates will be held at Noon on Tuesday, February 28, in the Living Room of the Student Center. Students will also have the opportunity to learn more about each candidates in a Meet the Candidates forum from 4-6 p.m. in the Living Room on Tuesday as well as in an informal Meet and Greet at Noon in the Starlight Room of the Student Center on Wednesday, February 29.
The results of this year's SUUSA Primary Elections will be announced at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the Living Room.
Online voting will open at 8 a.m. on Tuesday an close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Every currently enrolled SUU student is eligible to vote for one candidate in each of the four executive offices and for one senator within the voting student's respective college. Student who have not yet declared a major may self select in which college they wish to cast a senatorial vote.
To vote, students must have a valid SUU login and student ID. Voting will take place at online kiosks within the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
