Elementary Education

The Department of Teacher Education prepares teacher candidates to assist students in future classrooms across the United States become successful citizens in the 21st Century. SUU’s program provides outstanding opportunities for students to develop expertise as teachers through course and field experiences that draw upon faculty’s knowledge of specialty area content, instructional practices, and learning theory. In addition to coursework focusing on effective teaching, an integral component of our programs is the strong partnership built with the Iron County School District. Through this collaborative relationship, students are engaged in the teaching and learning process utilizing a variety of practicums in diverse school settings in grades K-12.

POINTS of DISTINCTION

  • Active learning experience with children of K-8th grade
  • Collaborative relationships with Utah School Districts allowing students to be engaged in the teaching and learning process in a variety of experiences in diverse school settings while being mentored by a host of Utah’s finest master teachers

  • Integrated curriculum dealing with pedagogy, methods, and working with exceptional students

POSSIBLE CAREERS

Utah licensed as K-6 Grade Teacher, 1-8 Grade Teacher, or Teaching Assistant position in schools

AVAILABLE RESOURCES

The College resides in a state-of-the-art Education Building and operates labs for hands-on experience. A Media Center with high-tech equipment is available for students and faculty to create innovative projects and learning opportunities

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

  • Practicum work with AmeriCorp* (* a government Corporation for National & Community Service)
  • Service-learning component completed with practicum and student teaching experiences
