I. Call to Order
Earl Mulderink called the meeting to order at 12:05 PM. In attendance: Lisa Assante (BUS), Steve Barney (HSS), Pam Branin (CSD), Briget Eastep (EDU), Lacie Jo Robinson (S&L Center), Beau Shakespear (Student), Cindy Wright (SCI). Excused: Boyd Fife (CIET), Jeff Hanson (PVA), Matt Nickerson (Honors and Library), Karl Stevens (SCPS).
II. Approval of Minutes
Minutes for the meeting of January 13, 2010, were approved without changes.
A. Chair’s Report
Earl Mulderink welcomed everyone and began with recent news items. He urged committee members to publicize service-learning as was done in the recent SUU Press Release, “South in Service,” that featured several committee members discussing Alternative Breaks in Mexico. Next, he distributed an article, “Does Service Learning Really Help?,” from the New York Times of January 3, 2010. Earl mentioned some upcoming events in which he is involved: Earl will present on “Rural Service-Learning” at the UCC conference next week in Salt Lake City; Pam Branin, Rita Osborn, and Earl will do a panel presentation at the Continuums of Service annual conference in Portland, sponsored by the Western Region Campus Compact Consortium; Earl was selected as one of 40 participants in the Diving Deep Institute, sponsored by the national and California Campus Compacts; and Earl’s “History and Service-Learning in Kenya” program got the green light with several SUU student participants. He ended by noting that Service-Learning Fellows nominations are due by March 12, and he expected that SUU will learn soon if we were added to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
B. Pam Branin, Coordinator of the Service & Learning Center
Pam Branin brought everyone up to date on Alternative Spring Breaks that included cancellation of the Taos trip and new policies for international travel. She mentioned that committee members Steve Barney and Karl Stevens will be faculty advisors for the trip to Guaymas, Mexico, in March. Pam also noted that Fox 13 news came to do a story on the HOPE Food Pantry; she was asked to keep us informed about its broadcast date.
Steve Barney reported on his recent co-authored publication in the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning. His article draws upon service-learning in an Abnormal Psychology class that investigates the stigma of mental illness. Co-authors are Grant Corser and Lynn White of the Psychology Department.
IV. New Business
A. Utah Campus Compact
Earl mentioned that two faculty expressed interest in attending the UCC Annual Conference: Shobha Gurung (Sociology) and Rebecca Rasmusson (Nursing). Also, he asked committee member distributed information about the annual awards for Civically Engaged Scholar, Staff Member, Student, and Community Partner. Nominations are due no later than March 5, 2010.
B. Carnegie Classification Effort
Earl distributed a number of handouts regarding the recently-opened Carnegie Classification for Community Engaged Institutions. Applications can be requested between now and March 31, and applications will be accepted through September 1. Committee members were asked to review the materials and ponder the pros and cons of pursuing an institutional application.
C. Curricular Issues and Course Proposals
Shobha Gurung’s two applications for SOC 4100 (Sociology of Health and Medicine) and SOC 4500 (Global Issues) were approved unanimously as service-learning courses. Committee members applauded her detailed application and supporting materials.
V. Old Business
A. Service-Learning Course Proposal Criteria (Subcommittee chaired by Lisa Assante)
Lisa led discussion about finalizing the service-learning course proposal form. She was asked to enhance information regarding minimum requirements (e.g., 25% course weighting and/or 20 or more hours per project), and she pledged to continue work on a generic liability and risk waiver statement that could be included in service-learning course syllabi. Committee members thanked Lisa for her outstanding efforts.
Lisa Assante provided a copy of the four-minute video produced by her student Raquel Roldan about the service-learning programs at Ruby’s Inn at Bryce Canyon National Park. We will try to place this video on our web site, and Earl said he would follow up with Jeff Hanson. Pam Branin mentioned that she has a student assistant, Kaeli Madsen, who could help us to maintain a revamped web site.
