I. Call to Order

Earl Mulderink called the meeting to order at 12:00 PM. In attendance: Lisa Assante (BUS), Steve Barney (HSS), Pam Branin (CSD), Shayla Hill (Student), Lacie Jo Robinson (S&L Center), Karl Stevens (SCPS), Cindy Wright (SCI). Excused: Briget Eastep (EDU), Boyd Fife (CIET), Jeff Hanson (PVA). Guest: Amy Dean (SUU/UCC Vista Staff).

II. Approval of Minutes
Minutes were approved for the meeting of January 26, 2011.

III. Reports
A. Chair’s Report

Earl Mulderink shared information about the Utah Campus Compact, including a recap of the recent Annual Conference and Recognition Event in Salt Lake City. SUU and Cedar City may have had the largest contingent at the event. UCC Executive Director Betsy Ward came to SUU last week to meet with President Benson and Provost Cook, along with everyone in the Service & Learning Center. Betsy continues to sing the praises of SUU’s engagement efforts and is eager for any feedback. Moving to PR, Earl showed copies of recent materials that showcased service and service-learning, such as the Centenarian’s Birthday Party at Emerald Pointe, Quarters for Queensland, the use of a Carnegie logo on the SUU web site, and a recent press release in which President Benson and SUU were acknowledged for receiving the Carnegie designation. Earl urged everyone to keep up these publicity efforts. Next, Earl reminded committee members that the deadline for Service-Learning Faculty Fellows applications is Friday, March 11; our committee will review the applications after Spring Break. Moving to undergraduate news, Earl reported that SUU will have two Service-Learning Scholars graduate in May: Alayna Purdy and Amy Heaps Whitmore.

Earl discussed progress in developing the Experiential Education Requirement (EER), including a recent presentation to and approval by SUU’s Trustees. He and other interim directors will attend a conference on electronic portfolios and experiential education at Westminster College. Also, a risk management consultant is coming to campus on March 9, for which $1,000 had been committed from the Civic Engagement budget. Earl distributed a syllabus for the revamped UNIV 1010, Introduction to Experiential Education, along with proposed modules for Community, Global, and Outdoor Engagement. A spirited discussion ensued, with several committee members expressing concerns about the proposed online formats for UNIV 1010, 3925, and 4925. Earl promised to share with the EER group concerns that focused on providing more personalized and face-to-face contact for students as they work through the EER program. He mentioned the EER’s use of Canvas, Optimal Resume, and enhanced web sites to help students navigate through the EER. He added that the Engagement Centers are concerned about workload and quality issues, as well.

B. Pam Branin, Coordinator of the Service & Learning Center

Pam Branin reported on three major items: 1) her ongoing work with Mark Davis in SUU’s Development Office; 2) the forthcoming Recognition Event on Monday, April 11, in the Gilbert Great Hall, 4-6 PM, with awards at 5:30; and 3) the new use of social media within and on behalf of the Service & Learning Center. Pam mentioned that Andreah Decker,, is very skilled in helping us to create displays, videos, PowerPoints and other materials for the Recognition Event or Facebook. Pam has purchased two flip cameras that have already shown their value in new video clips posted to the new Facebook page overseen by Amy Dean. As a VISTA worker charged with community outreach, Amy will be filming and compiling information about community partners; feel free to send suggestions and contacts to her directly: . Later, Pam mentioned plans to purchase Macbook computers for processing audiovisual materials.

C. Other Reports

Lisa Assante reported on her guest presentation in another class which the students were captivated by a video of previous service-learning work on behalf of Ruby’s Inn. Lisa also explained how QR codes can be used to advertised events and web sites. Lacie Jo Robinson informed the committee of pending federal legislation that would gut funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service, and thus affect our AmeriCorps and VISTA positions.

IV. New Business
A. Service-Learning Training and Learning Modules (handout)

Based on an excellent presentation at the UCC Annual Conference, Earl distributed materials about Weber State University’s Learning Modules that are now available through the UCC web site. WSU has graciously allowed other UCC schools to use or adapt online learning modules that provide excellent training for students doing service and service-learning. Students may complete one or more modules and print a certificate for each. The topics are: Professionalism, Cultural Sensitivity, Ethics, Introduction to Tutoring and Mentoring, Mentoring, Tutoring, Pre-College Knowledge, and FERPA. Earl suggested that SUU make efforts to incorporate these modules (or something similar) as a low-cost and effective way to provide consistent training.

B. Service-Learning Course Proposals ELED 3460 (Houser), submitted for second time

With thanks to Briget Eastep for working with Professor Karen Houser in submitting a revised syllabus, the committee approved ELED 3460 as a Service-Learning course.
