I. Call to Order

Earl Mulderink called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. In attendance: Pam Branin (CEC), Veronica Cazares (CEC), Briget Eastep (EDU), Shayla Hill (Student), Lucas Knowles (VISTA), Karl Stevens (SCPS), Cindy Wright (COSE). Excused: Lisa Assante (BUS), Boyd Fife (COSE), Jeff Hanson (PVA), Wynne Summers (HSS).

II. Approval of Minutes

Minutes were approved for the meeting of November 28, 2011

III. Reports

A. Earl Mulderink, Chair

Earl informed the committee that the Community Engagement Center has hired Gabrielle Strand as a Program Specialist to oversee AmeriCorps/Service Corps. Earl mentioned that SUU submitted an application for the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Utah Campus Compact hosted an Engaged Faculty Institute in Moab, Utah, February 2-3, 2012. He mentioned international service-learning trips included Nicaragua, Panama, and Ghana, along with relevant fund-raising events. This year’s Service-Learning Fellows applications are now available against a deadline of March 9, 2012. Under the sponsorship of the SUU’s Professional Business Leaders club, the “Teddy Bear Dean” will be housed in the CEC with an official open house and dedication on March 21, 2012.

Other forthcoming events include the UCC’s Annual Recognition Event on April 2, 2012, at UVU. Earl and Pam will be attending the Continuums of Service Conference in Seattle, WA, April 11-13, 2012. The CEC invites everyone to the annual “Thank You Event” on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in the Starlight Room, 3-5 PM. Light refreshments will be served and a short program will begin at 4 PM. Committee members were encouraged to invite students, groups, and colleagues to create displays for the event. Finally, Earl distributed a small booklet from UC-Berkeley as a potential resource for designing “Community-Based Courses.” One of the authors, Kathleen Rice, has visited SUU as a consultant.

B. Pam Branin, Associate Director of the Community Engagement Center

Pam will attend a volunteer training certification program sponsored by the Utah Commission on Volunteers, joined by Amy Brinkerhoff of the Iron County Volunteer Center. Pam discussed a recent “mini-break” trip with SUU’s Service Hall to Kanab. During the overnight trip, participants volunteered at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. As an update about CEC-sponsored Alternative Break Trips, 11 students are signed up for San Diego, 11 for Tacoma, and 8 for Taos.

IV. New Business

A. Utah Campus Compact Awards

The committee discussed nominations and agreed upon SUU’s 2012 honorees:
Civically-Engaged Scholar: Carrie Trenholm
Civically-Engaged Student: Emranda Sorensen
Civically-Engaged Staff Member: Casey Bowns and Marisa Foster
Committed Community Partner: East Elementary School (Principal Steve Burton and Teacher Kim Sauceda).

B. Service-Learning Materials

The committee discussed and approved two items forwarded by CEC staff and students: 1) a “Service-Learning Independent Study Contract,” and 2) a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU should be forwarded to Risk Management for review, and the SL Contract will be shared with others, as well.

C. Experiential Education Program Updates.

Earl explained the status of UNIV 3925 and asked for assistance in reviewing over forty EE Project Proposals. Briget, Cindy, and Pam all offered to serve.
