Experiential Learning Leadership Institute

What is ELLI?

ELLI is the acronym for the Experiential Learning Leadership Institute at Southern Utah University. The Institute promotes, designs and execute programs and events that feature, train and explore all aspects of experiential learning and its applications to educational institutions. From conferences, retreats, journal writings to networking, we are a place that supports and promotes experiential learning and teaching!

What is Experiential Learning?

Experiential Learning is a pedagogy in which educators purposefully engage with learners in direct experience outside the classroom, followed by focused reflection, critical analysis, and synthesis of ideas. Originating from David Kolb, this learning model believes that the learner must:

  • be willing to be actively involved in the experience;
  • be able to reflect on the experience;
  • possess and use analytical skills to conceptualize the experience; and
  • possess decision making and problem-solving skills in order to use the new ideas gained from the experience.

What can ELLI do for you?

Our institute offers programming and benefits for K-12 Educators, Higher Education Professionals, and members of the Non-Profit Community.

For K-12 Educators

Our conferences provide sessions on applying experiential and project-based learning into their classrooms. We welcome all who are just getting started, experiential education veterans, and all between. Attend sessions led by other professionals, get hands on experience, take graduate level courses, and connect with leaders in the experiential education field. And, we offer graduate level credit (5000 level) for attending Concurrent Sessions at this year’s annual conference.

For Higher Education

We can be a resource for you to get energized about your teaching or other endeavors! The annual conference has a retreat like feel which will rejuvenate your teaching and give you new and exciting tools to help you and your students. (Think of it like a massage for your teaching). Connect to experiential education programs from around the nation and even attend pre-conference workshops by the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE).

For Non-Profit

Make connections with other professionals at our conference and learn how experiential learning can be an assist to your organization, giving you tools to connect and present that are unique to experiential learning. You can attend our pre-conference workshops, attend our concurrent workshops, experience PechaKucha, and enjoy engaging excursions!
