Program Description & Program Requirements

The General Studies major is a customized program in which the student (in collaboration with, and under the professional guidance of, an academic advisor) develops an undergraduate degree that reflects their particular interests, and meets the University’s graduation requirements. This degree is ideal for self-directed learners.

To graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies, the student is required to complete the SUU General Education curriculum, the Experiential Education requirement, and the BS (12 credits of Math or Science) or BA (16 credits of foreign language) requirement. Additionally, the General Studies degree requires students to complete a minimum of 54 credits, including the General Studies Core Courses (GS 4010 – General Studies Research Seminar and GS 4020 – General Studies Capstone). Of the required 54 credits, a minimum of 21 credits must be upper-division credits (3000-4999).

A formal General Studies degree plan must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office, after being approved by the student, Academic Advisor, and Department Chair before the student’s graduation application will be reviewed.

Other SUU graduation requirements include: 2.0 GPA (SUU and overall), 120 total credits, 40 upper-division credits, and 30 credits from SUU.
