T-Bird Outdoor Connection (TOC) is designed for participants to create lasting friendships, connect to the SUU community, and appreciate the amazing places surrounding Cedar City. TOC provides the opportunity to learn and be inspired in natural landscapes through meaningful adventure. Your four-day adventure awaits!

Agenda of Events

August 18
Begin by first getting to know the surrounding area of Cedar City during the day, participating in team building activities, and finishing with camping at Three Peaks Recreation Area at night.

August 19
During your second day, you will have the opportunity to explore Southern Utah at Quail Creek State Park, just south of Cedar City. Activities such as stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, and large group activities at and near the lake will be provided.

August 20
The third day you will divide into your designated group which is previously chosen during registration. Groups of 10 students with 2 leaders will travel to their destination and embark in a full day of activity. Choose any one of the 5 trips listed below.

August 21
On your fourth day, groups will have a half day to continue activity or explore nearby locations. Students will return to SUU campus where everyone will get together and end with our annual traditions. TOC will end in the afternoon whereupon students may return to their housing in time to prepare for Thunder-U. Thunder-U, a student directed orientation, will begin August 22nd.

Backpacking - Zion National Park

Located in Southwestern Utah, Zion National Park is native to massive red sandstone cliffs with an array of unique hikes, plants, and animals. This trip offers backpacking through Kolob Canyon on its Lee Pass trail, which is 12-miles round trip. Staying overnight in the backcountry, you will experience some of the brightest stars and quietest nights, as the campground is among one of the more secluded locations the park offers.

Canyoneering - Zion National Park

Located in Southwestern Utah, Zion National Park is native to massive sandstone cliffs with an array of unique hikes, plants, and animals. This trip offers hiking to and canyoneering down narrow slot canyons of the surrounding area. Experience route planning, thrilling descends as you rappel, and an increase in confidence as you and your group conquer majestic canyoneering locations throughout the Zion area. Camp overnight at the Watchman Campground which offers scenery of tall sandstone cliffs that glow red and orange during the sunrise and sunset.

Rock Climbing - Snow Canyon State Park

Located in Southwestern Utah, Crawdad Canyon is one of the only, privately owned, outdoor rock climbing parks in the USA. Enjoy the various climbing routes in cool weather made from loads of shade and a cool breeze from the Santa Clara River flowing below the canyon walls. This trip offers sport climbing through short routes along the towering walls, strategically planning your route, and immediate gratification of completing challenging routes. Camp overnight at Snow Canyon State Park in the peaceful campground surrounded by ancient lava flows and red Navajo sandstone. Continue your adventure in the morning as you experience beautiful hikes and short bouldering routes with breathtaking views of Snow Canyon State Park.

Caving and Peaking - Great Basin National Park

Located near the border of Nevada and Utah, Great Basin National Park is home to Bloomington Caves and Wheeler Peak. This trip offers the opportunity to hike up Wheeler Peak which is the second-tallest peak in Nevada reaching a summit elevation of 13,065. Explore world famous Bloomington Caves as you learn about folia, stalactites, and shields through a guided tour. And observe the brightest of stars in an IDA certified International Dark Sky Park as you stay overnight.

Hiking - Cathedral Gorge State Park

Located in southeastern Nevada, hike within Cathedral Gorge State Park, where erosion has carved dramatic and unique patterns in the soft bentonite clay. The park’s beauty began with explosive volcanic activity that, with each eruption, deposited layers of ash hundreds of feet thick. Great walking trails abound for exploring the cave-like formations and cathedral-like spires. The park offers stunning views of the scenic canyon where can enjoy hiking, picnicking, camping and nature study.
