Garrett Shaw has been announced as the valedictorian for Southern Utah University's Class of 2024. Originally from Pleasant Grove, UT, Shaw chose SUU for its reasonable tuition, small class sizes and proximity to outdoor activities, including hiking and exploring nearby national parks.

Double-majoring in business management and accounting, Shaw credits Professor Greg Powell as his most significant mentor.

"Garrett's class contributions were some of the finest I've ever had in that course," said Professor Powell. "He was always able to make intelligent connections between the academic topics we discussed in class, and his work experiences. His in-class comments demonstrate a deep understanding and interest in the material. Garrett's classroom leadership and courage in speaking up encouraged other students to think deeply about and share their own experiences."

Powell's mentorship helped Shaw clarify his academic goals and career direction. "It really benefited me listening to him talk about his career path and how he ended up as a professor," said Shaw. " It helped me flesh out my own thoughts about what I was doing."

Additionally, Professor Jon Lee's tax class inspired Shaw to add accounting as an additional major. "Professor Lee worked with me on understanding the topic," Shaw explained. "I loved the content and its relevance to real life."

Shaw believes his university experience has prepared him well for the future, especially in managing his time effectively. He emphasized the importance of balancing academic excellence with personal interests, prioritizing what matters most in life.

"Finding a way to manage my time is arguably the most valuable lesson I have [learned] in the last four years," said Shaw.

Shaw was surprised to be named University Valedictorian saying, "I always felt that many of the people around me were very intelligent and never thought this would be a reality. SUU has some really great students."

Shaw plans to attend BYU Law School, starting in the fall of 2024.

Southern Utah University's Commencement Ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the America First Event Center.
