Why should I apply to attend the Governor's Honors Academy [GHA]?

The Governor's Honors Academy is a unique experience. Only the top 50 students who apply are able to attend this prestigious academy. As a participant, you will make incredible friendships while pursuing the quest of academic knowledge. During the nine days of The Academy you will participate in dozens of speakers and workshops. You'll explore the world through the arts, sciences, social sciences and come to understand a variety of perspectives. What are the dates for GHA?

The 2015 Governor's Honors Academy will be held from June 19 - 27, 2015 at Southern Utah University.

What is the cost to attend the Governor's Honors Academy?

The cost $1000.00. However, participants are given information on seeking sponsors to help cover the cost of attendance.

What GPA do I need to have to apply?


Is the ACT required to apply?

Yes. It is recommended that you take the February 2015 ACT in order to have your score back in time to apply. However, you can take the March (in school) ACT and provide that score to the GHA office prior to the March 30th deadline.  We recommend that you submit your GHA application without the score (indicate that you took the ACT the first part of March) and then call or email the GHA office once you receive your results. What if I haven't taken the ACT or I'm not scheduled to take it in February?

Only students who have completed the ACT will be considered for admission to the Academy. SUU offers a residual ACT test on the second Tuesday of each month. You can take the residual ACT test in January, February or March and use that score to apply to the Academy. Results from the residual are available the next day. The cost is the same as the National ACT test. You can get more information about this on the SUU testing website.

What do you look for in our transcripts?

We evaluate the courses you have taken and the level of difficulty of those courses.

What do we do during GHA?

It's hard to describe all that takes place during GHA.  We spend a lot of time learning and a lot of time playing.  We attend the Tony Award Winning Utah Shakespeare Festival, and several National Parks. We participate with multiple renowned speakers. We hold small group interactive sessions to promote leadership and self awareness. We also hold a GHA Dance, talent show, and swimming party. We are often busy from before sun up and don't retire until after the sun has gone down- You won't be bored.

How many days is the academy?

9 days

Is food and housing extra?

The $1000 covers lodging, meals, transportation during the academy and all scheduled activities. Individual spending money is optional.

How many apply and attend GHA?

We receive between 250-300 applications each year. We accept roughly 50 participants each year.

When is the deadline for the application?

The deadline for the application is March 30th. No postmarked documents are accepted.

Can I mail my application on March 30th and still be accepted?

The completed application with all required documents must be in the GHA Office by 5 PM on March 30, 2015. If you are hand delivering your application, you may do so by 5 PM in the SUU Admissions Welcome Center, located inside the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
