Frequently Asked Questions
Anyone can enroll in the Best Friends courses! The one exception is the Executive and Management Leadership certificates (MCL & ELC), which are by invitation only and designed specifically for shelter leaders.
Yes — with one exception. All courses are fully online, except Running a Lifesaving Animal Sanctuary, which includes an in-person component at the end of the course.
The majority of courses are 7 weeks long and fully asynchronous, meaning you can complete the work on your own schedule within that timeframe.
Classes are offered on a rotating schedule — some run every semester, others every other semester, depending on the course.
All students receive a digital badge upon completing any course. Some courses also result in a certificate (Introduction to Animal Services, Running a Lifesaving Animal Sanctuary, MLC, ELC). If you complete all three of the following courses, you earn the CASL (Contemporary Animal Services Leadership) certificate: Dog Lifesaving, Cat Lifesaving, and Finding Success in Animal Services.
Yes. All Best Friends classes offer the option to transfer credits into a bachelor's degree program. A select few courses also transfer toward a master's degree.

Introduction to Animal Services
Introduction to Animal Services is a seven-week certificate program offering an introduction to the contemporary animal services profession. With content curated by Best Friends Animal Society and leading practitioners and researchers in the field, participants will gain an awareness and understanding of contemporary animal services as a profession.
Successful completion of this 29-hour online learning experience results in an SUU Institutional Certificate and serves as a potential entry point to advanced education opportunities.

- Introduction to Animal Services Certificate ($399) - successful completion earns an SUU Institutional Certificate and one Continuing Education Unit (CEU)
- Introduction to Animal Services Fast Track ($799) - successful completion earns three credits that may articulate into undergraduate or participating master’s degree programs at Southern Utah University.

Introduction to Animal Services Course Work
This course includes online modules, assessments, reading reflections and a summary paper. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions relevant to their modules and assignments, with the end goal of building a learning community focused on contemporary animal services as a profession. Lessons include:
- History of Animal Welfare in the United States: Students will examine an overview of the evolution of the animal welfare movement by reviewing the origins of animal shelters, the role of public safety and the transition to animal sheltering.
- The Role of Animal Shelters: Students will review data and statistics related to pet ownership over the past 40 years, reasons for pet relinquishment and the role of animal-related nonprofits in the community.
- Contemporary Animal Services: Students will review the programs, policies and procedures needed to save pets before they reach the animal shelter door, in the community and inside of the shelter.
- Community Animal Services Data: Gain experience researching the tools used to measure lifesaving efficacy and examine a community’s animal services history and performance.
Running a Lifesaving Animal Sanctuary
Running a Lifesaving Animal Sanctuary (RLAS) is a three-month hybrid course offering online self-study, live weekly Zoom calls and an in-person experience at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. The in-person experience includes a tour of the facilities and live classes with animal care experts, plus group and individual mentoring.
Designed for those interested in starting an animal sanctuary and not looking to work in a municipal shelter or humane society. Many people have the skills, resources and talents to help animals in their communities. They may need and benefit from Best Friends’ history, experience, knowledge, resources and insights in creating a successful organization.

- Regular classes are held March 11 – May 20, 2026, with live Zoom calls on Wednesdays from 1:30 - 3:00 MT.

Cat Lifesaving Fundamentals
Course Cost: $299
The Cat Lifesaving Fundamentals (CLF) offers practitioners, community members, advocates and volunteers an opportunity to learn about the proven policies, programs and procedures to meet the community’s expectations. It focuses foundationally on how cat lifesaving can be increased.
Students will develop a community of animal services advocates and professionals to be better prepared to support and lead programs. They will gain clarity on what success looks like and have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of positive results.

Course Cost: $299
Finding Success in Animal Services (FSAS) explores the foundations of the field of animal services and prepares participants to support change and learn the importance of data. During the seven-week course, students will learn about career opportunities within the field, programs that support lifesaving and become more confident in leading change.
Topics covered include engaging the community, effectively working in the shelter environment, enhancing organizational culture, building resilience, successfully forming partnerships, and much more.
Successfully completing FSAS results in a digital microcredential that, when stacked together with the Dog Lifesaving Fundamentals and Cat Lifesaving Fundamentals, completes the Contemporary Animal Services Fundamentals Certificate.
