APPEL and APPEL SPED

At a Glance

  • Tuition: $100/credit
  • Duration: Varies
  • Total Credits: Determined by ASD

Program Details

Looking for a Utah teaching license and already have a bachelor's degree? SUU's APPEL and APPEL SPED programs are the answer for district employees.

The Alternate Pathway to Professional Educator License (APPEL) is a program through the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) that enables school district employees to gain a Utah teaching license for P12 or Special Education.

With APPEL you will be given a professional learning plan (PLP) by your employer school district after the APPEL district program manager reviews your transcripts. The manager’s evaluation will determine how many credits and courses you need to meet licensure requirements. Special Education APPEL PLPs are made by the Utah State Office of Education.

Once you complete the courses for your individual plan, the school district will recommend you for licensure with the state.

SUU does not handle any of the licensure or set up for the program. SUU solely offers classes that may be required for individuals completing this licensure program.

In this 100 percent online program you can study around your schedule, and have the traditional structure to help you stay on track. Courses are just 7-weeks long. It is recommended that you enroll in only one or two courses at a time.

Up to 12 credits of this program may be rolled into an SUU M.Ed.
