About SUU Police Office
All of the officers are P.O.S.T. certified and trained. Each officer must complete at least 40 hours of training a year as well as comply with University policy. All officers are trained in handling law enforcement situations and are capable in performing law enforcement services. Any criminal activity should be reported to the SUU Police office. To ensure campus safety, and enforce the campus and city laws, officers patrol campus regularly. Every year, at least two employees in the Safety Patrol Office are trained in sexual assault and rape response.
Reporting Sexual Assault or Rape Incidents
- The SUU Police Office encourages reporting of any crimes on campus.
- If a sexual assault incident has occurred, contact either 911 or SUU Police by calling (435) 586-1911 or reporting to the SUU Police Office in the Sharwan Smith Center, Room 172.
- If a rape has occurred, find a safe place and call 911 or immediately go to a hospital. You may also contact the SUU Police Office and they can assist you in obtaining further help.

Reporting Procedures
- Once you contact the SUU Police Office, you will be directed to the Full-Time Department Secretary or the SUU officer on duty. If you feel more comfortable at your location, the officer on duty will go to where you are. Make sure that you are in a safe environment and wait until the officer arrives. Otherwise, you may go directly to the SUU Police Office where the Department Secretary or on-duty officer will assist you. The SUU Police Office encourages receiving help immediately from a hospital if a rape has occurred.
- You will be asked some questions about the incident such as:
- Where the incident occurred
- The description/identity of the suspect
- Details about the incident
- If you are calling 911, a dispatcher will ask you a series of questions. Listen carefully and try to answer the best you can. The questions that you will be asked might include:
- Give a brief description of what occurred.
- Where exactly did the incident occur? Include building and room/area.
- Give a detailed description of the events that occurred.
- How long ago did the incident occur?
- Did the suspect(s) have any weapons?
- Where and when was the suspect last seen?
- Which direction was the suspect headed?
- Was the suspect on foot or in a vehicle?
- What did the suspect(s) look like? Describe each suspect one at a time.
- Gender
- Race
- Age
- Height & Weight
- Hair Color & Length
- Clothing
- Glasses/Facial Hair
- Was the suspect carrying anything?
- Vehicle Description, Color, Make, Model, License Plate
Reporting Options
When reporting an incident of sexual assault or rape, you have several options:
- Anonymous reporting: You are not required to use your name when reporting an incident of sexual assault or rape. If you choose to continue with the adjudication process, you still have the option of remaining anonymous (i.e., using an alias).
- Confidential reporting: Reporting incidents of sexual assault or rape will remain confidential at the request of the survivor.
- Formal reporting procedure: An official report made to the SUU Police Office will follow the standard investigation procedures.
- Third-party reporting: If you know someone who has been sexually assaulted or raped, you have the option of informally reporting the incident. While it is not a formal report, further investigation of the incident may occur.
- The SUU Police Office will assist you in obtaining further assistance such as counseling or health services.
