SUU Introduces Flight Simulators to Aviation Program

Southern Utah University’s School of Business has announced plans to install Flight Simulators for helicopter and airplane flight simulation, enabling students in the SUU Aviation Professional Pilot Program to take advantage of the valuable training benefits beginning fall semester 2016.

“We are very excited to be adding simulators to our program,” said Rich Cannon, school director and chief flight instructor at SUU. “Simulators provide excellent supplemental training where new concepts and complicated procedures can be performed in a controlled environment. Training can be paused as needed to allow for immediate feedback and instruction.”

The Frasca FTD Flight Simulators will replicate flying the Robinson 44 Helicopter with the Garmin G-500 avionics package and the Cessna 172 Airplane with the Garmin G-1000 avionics package. Students are able to learn in the controlled environment of a simulator where weather conditions such as snow, rain or high winds are no longer a concern.

The R44 FTD is a high fidelity simulator for the Robinson R44 helicopter. “Over the past few years, we've had customers mention that the fidelity of existing light helicopter simulators was inadequate and limited transfer of learning,” said John Frasca, president of Frasca International.  “We listened and determined that a high fidelity device with FTD Level 5 approval was needed. Our engineers were able to incorporate the fidelity and quality of our Full Flight Simulators into an entry level FTD.”

The cockpit of Frasca’s R44 FTD is a replica of the aircraft and includes panels, controls and instrumentation. Control pressures are realistically simulated by Frasca’s TruFeel™ control loading system. The R44 FTD includes Frasca’s TruVision™ Global visual system featuring a specialized helicopter mission training database. It can also to be converted into an S300 by removing the Robinson T style cyclic and adding two S300 style cyclics. “With this incredibly accurate R44 FTD, we have elevated the level of simulation available for this class of aircraft which allows more training to be performed in the simulator.” The R44 FTD is designed for use by helicopter flight schools, commercial operators, and parapublic organizations.
