There are plenty of expansive lists online for college packing (like this Digital Packing List For Freshman), and there are a few specific items you may not realize you need for college living.

Here are 6 things you may not know you need to bring to college.

Nightlight/lamp. You’ll probably get tired of reading under your dorm’s fluorescent lighting. Bring a table lamp or plug-in light to give yourself a warmer option, and a light to read by while your roommate is sleeping.

First aid kit. You will likely get sick at least once each college year, whether it’s from close living quarters with roommates or stress-induced sickness (yes, that’s a thing). To avoid this as best possible, bring a “sick box” with pain and fever medication, cold remedy, tissues, bandages and any other medications you may need.

Cleaning supplies. Your parents have probably purchased all the cleaning supplies you’ve ever needed. Now it’s your job. Be sure to stock your kitchen and bathroom with the necessities: dish soap, sink scrubber, mop, broom, cleaning spray, cleaning cloths, and glass cleaner.

Earplugs & sleep mask. You may have shared a room with siblings growing up, but a new person sleeping in the same room introduces a whole slew of unprecedented factors. From sleep talking to late night studying, you don’t realize how loud people can be until you share a room. Have these essential items ready to help you effectively check out and get the rest you need.

Electric blanket & fan. Living with roommates will quickly reveal people’s personal temperature preferences. Some like it hot, some like it cold, but no matter who has control of the overall dorm temp make sure you have backup plans. Bring an electric blanket for when you can’t feel your toes and a fan or portable AC unit for when it’s too hot to think.

Shower supplies. You never know how much you need a shower caddie until you don’t have one. Same with shower shoes, a robe/towel, portable shampoo & conditioner, and shaving supplies.

Luckily, most colleges have a Walmart or convenience store close by, so if you forget these items, it’s not the end of the world. Good luck with your college packing and make sure to thank your parents for their support!
