Southern Utah University’s Gerald R. Sherratt LibraryHaving a hard time with your thesis or capstone projects? Southern Utah University’s Gerald R. Sherratt Library is offering a semester-long course intended for students working on their thesis and capstone projects, putting students ahead. Throughout this course, students will be guided through the steps of their thesis and capstone research projects and leave the class with a finished literature review for a research proposal.

This course is currently being piloted this semester with two students. During the span of a single semester, students work on selecting a topic, consulting with library staff, building background knowledge on that topic, searching discipline-specific databases for relevant sources, engaging with these sources, and synthesizing information from those articles into a coherent literature review that situates their proposed research project in the existing literature.

“We heard from departments that their students struggle with the work involved in their thesis or capstone projects,” said Dr. Anne Diekema, course instructor and associate professor of library and information science. “The initial step where students need to come up with a viable topic and write a literature review for their research proposals can be especially challenging. That’s when we decided to offer this advanced library research course.”

Students embarking on their capstone or thesis or capstone research projects will want to take this one-credit hour course to prepare them for their project. It has one final concrete deliverable: a finished literature review.

The required prerequisites are INFO 1010 or INFO 2010 or LM 1010, the minimum grade acceptable being a C-. This course is available to juniors and seniors.

Students won’t want to miss this opportunity to get a leg up and start their research project off right. They will be far ahead of the class and poised to complete a quality capstone project or thesis by the end of the class.
