Southern Utah University’s psychology bachelor’s degree program explores the fascinating science of behavior and mental processes. Student Empowers Others Through Volunteer Work

For Cheyenne Terry, a senior psychology major from Salt Lake City, family growth and helping others has always been her passion.

Recently Cheyenne has used that passion to help a local crisis center in Cedar City. After a suggestion from her advisor, Andrea Donovan, Cheyenne started volunteering with the Canyon Creek Women’s Crisis Center (CCWCC).

Future Therapist Learns About Culture Awareness in Spain

Taylor Morgan, a junior psychology major with an emphasis in human services, came to SUU from Irvine, California. She soon discovered that she has a great desire to work with and help others.

In May, she traveled to Spain with the SUU Psychology department. The trip gave her an opportunity to see the world from a different point of view and to better understand cultural differences.

Pursuing his passion, Mace received bachelor, master, and doctorate level degrees in psychology. His favorite topic within the discipline is environmental psychology because it is problem oriented and interdisciplinary.

Professor Garrett Strosser

Dr. Garrett Strosser became interested in psychology while working on his bachelor’s degree at Angelo State University in Texas. He worked as a counselor and therapist for four years before deciding to focus on research and teaching. When asked what he enjoys most about teaching Strosser replied, "teaching allows me to see students' enthusiasm and excitement about psychology. When I hear their ideas, feel their energy, and see the potential for creativity in the classroom, I remember why I teach."

Professor Lynn White

As a graduate student, Dr. Lynn White was required to teach a few undergraduate classes, a hoop she needed to jump through in order to get on with her research as she fully intended on becoming a research psychologist. However, White was pleasantly surprised by the adrenaline rush that accompanied her first day in class and discovered how much she loved teaching.

After a year of teaching she knew she wanted a career that focused on education, but still allowed her to participate in research.

Psychology Alumni - Aferdit Sadrija

SUU to Leading Cancer Research

Aferdit Sadrija came to Southern Utah University wanting to study physical therapy, but found herself switching her major multiple times. She began to have one-on-one conversations with professors which sparked an interest to pursue a career in clinical research. Aferdit graduated with two bachelor degrees; one in psychology and the other in human nutrition with an emphasis in allied health.

Directly after graduation, Aferdit was hired as a clinical research coordinator for the Huntsman Cancer Institute, a highly noted NCI-designated cancer research facility and hospital.

Psychology Alumni - Cory Reese

SUU to Social Worker

After a visit to Southern Utah University, Cory Reese from Jordan, Utah, knew SUU was the school for him. From the small class sizes to the friendly faculty, Cory felt at home on the beautiful tree-lined campus. As a student, Cory was involved in Psi Chi, the International Honors Society for psychology, worked for the alumni association, and represented the school as a Presidential Ambassador. Cory is currently a social worker for the University of Utah Dialysis Program. In addition to his accomplishments as a social worker, Cory’s perseverance has carried him to the finish line of over 70 races all over the United States since 2009.

Psychology Undergraduate Research

Undergraduates conduct research with the help of faculty mentors. SUU’s undergraduate research and scholarship program provides grants, information, services and links to on and off-campus resources. Students present their research at the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science and or the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association. Publication opportunities are available with the URC Undergraduate Research Journal and the Journal of Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences.
