Psychology Internship/Capstone: Steps to Get Started

  • Complete the Intern Orientation Training.
  • Complete the Annual Student Title IX Training.
  • Take the prerequisite course (PSY 3800) for Clinical Internships or (PSY 3410/3415) for Research Internships. For PSY 4890 Psychology Internship, you must have completed at least 30 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5. For PSY 4891 Psychology Capstone Internship, you must have completed at least 90 credit hours, including at least 24 hours of psychology beyond PSY 1010, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Think of a career you would like to pursue.
  • Think of a population with whom you would like to work.
  • Identify a possible internship site that matches your career/occupational goals. You can review the placement options and availability. Do not contact any agency directly regarding a placement without first talking with the Southern Utah University Psychology Department.
  • Visit with the Internship Coordinator (Dr. Steve Barney,  barney@suu.edu, GC 308 J) about your plans.
  • Obtain a copy of the syllabus for one of the following courses and read the instructions:
  • Meet with the Internship Supervisor at the agency where you will be working.
  • Create your Learning Objectives in the  SUU Internship Learning Agreement, according to the specifications detailed in the syllabus.
  • Ensure your internship site has a Master Internship Agreement with SUU (review the Online SUU Internship Application form). If not, meet with your departmental Academic Internship Advisor (Dr. Steve Barney barney@suu.edu) to get one started.
  • Submit the Online Internship Application Form for approvals. Once all approvals are signed, you will be enrolled in the appropriate course. Be sure to include the correct course number and CRN (Psychology Internship PSY 4890, Psychology Capstone Internship PSY 4891). The CRN can be found on the syllabus or on the class schedule for that semester.
  • As soon as you receive notification of approval, you may begin working on your internship hours (45 Internship Hours = 1 Credit Hour)
