Glorious music and musicians have always been part of Southern Utah University. And, very soon, they will be part of New York, too.

The Opus Choir of SUU has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City this upcoming January! This prestigious honor makes yet another tremendously strong statement about the quality of the SUU music program and the talent of its students.

To further support Opus, SUU is sponsoring a banquet and concert on November 15 to help send the group to Carnegie.

Another highlight of the evening will be the induction of Dr. Blaine Johnson, Professor Emeritus in Music, into SUU’s Hall of Honor. Dr. Johnson was Choral Director and Music Department Chair from 1957 -1980. A Reception for Dr. Johnson will begin at 5 p.m. in the Whiting Room of the Hunter Conference Center on the SUU campus. At 5:30 p.m., a Banquet will be served in his honor in the Great Hall, and then his Induction will take place.

At the Concert, which begins at 8 p.m. in the Heritage Center in downtown Cedar City, Opus, accompanied by the SUU Symphony Orchestra, will perform Mozart’s Requiem as a special tribute to Dr. Johnson. This piece seems only natural to perform for Johnson, as it was one of his favorite to conduct and perform while teaching at SUU. Also, it is particularly fitting to have the proceeds of this concert assist Opus, a group dear to his heart, in traveling to New York City.
