Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. accepted the invitation to speak to family members, friends, honored guests and graduates of Southern Utah University’s class of 2007 during the 108th annual commencement exercises on May 5, 2007, in the Centrum Arena.

As the keynote speaker he will offer comments to more than 1,100 graduates preparing to embark on the world.

In addition to the associates, bachelors and masters degree that will be awarded following his comments, Huntsman will also have a degree conferred upon him. In recognition of all he has accomplished he will be receiving an honorary doctorate of Public Service from SUU.

Huntsman earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He first began his career in public service as a White House staff assistant to President Ronald Reagan and has since served senior appointments in the Commerce and State Departments.

His resume also includes service as a Deputy United States Trade Representative and U.S. Ambassador, speaking fluent Mandarin.

A business leader and former United States diplomat, Huntsman has much to say regarding the preparation that education can provide. He stands firm behind his key objectives including support for public education, and specifically has laid out a 10-point plan for higher education in Utah.

He attributes the Utah System of Higher Education with being a primary contributor to the state’s ability to foster new jobs, new industry, and a better way of life for all Utahans. He recognizes that well trained students who are prepared to enter the workforce will aid in his effort to bolster the economic development within the state, as well as the nation.

It is due to these life experiences and knowledge that Huntsman was selected to deliver the commencement address this year.

Commencement will begin at 9 a.m. with the selected keynote and student speakers, awarding of honorary doctorate degrees and other special recognitions. Following which graduate degrees and certificates will be awarded during individual college convocations. For more information regarding SUU’s commencement ceremonies, visit www.suu.edu/graduation.
