Southern Utah women’s soccer will open its home conference slate when the Thunderbirds host the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks and the IUPUI Jaguars this weekend. However, it will be the game against IUPUI on Saturday that will mean more than just the play on the field as the team will host its third annual Breast Cancer Awareness game at 2 p.m.

“This is an important week for us,” Head Coach Brian Stock said of the games. “The conference season is when you need to play some of your best soccer and we’ll expect that effort on the field. And of course the game on Saturday is a special game for us and it always means a lot to our girls.”

This year, as in years past, SUU’s players will wear pink uniforms to show support for all the fans, friends and community members who have been affected by breast cancer.

The authentic pink Thunderbird jerseys will individually be sold in a commemorative package that includes an autographed team photo, a 2009 media guide and a commemorative game roster.

In two years, Southern Utah women's soccer has raised over $5,000 towards breast cancer research. The team has set a goal to match that total this year.

To help them reach this lofty goal, SUU’s Alpha Phi sorority will be selling pink gear, t-shirts and hats, to he help Thunderbird fans get in the pink.

Fans may also enjoy lunch and prize drawings throughout the game.

Proceeds from all these efforts will be donated to the local Huntsman-Intermountain Cancer Education Center at Valley View Medical Center.

The team literally kicked off this tradition three years ago after Coach Stock lost a family member to breast cancer. He and his players look at this event as a way to both honor those who have lost the fight to this terrible disease and give hope to those who continue to fight.

Knowing that early detection is vital to success in this battle, the team also sees community awareness and education as a very important component of their efforts.

Game time against IUPUI for Saturday’s pink match is slated for 2 p.m.

Leading up to Saturday’s festivities, fans are invited to come by SUU’s athletic department offices for coupons to Gandolfo’s Deli that will earmark 20 percent of your purchase all day Saturday as a donation towards breast cancer research.
