Acclaimed Advisor, Author & Educator Brings Insight to Campus

Southern Utah University’s keynote Commencement speaker and acclaimed business
advisor, author and professor for the Harvard Business School, Dr. Clayton Christensen, has offered to donate his time and talents to the SUU and local community with a special convocation this Friday, May 6, at 1:30 p.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theatre.

Thanks to his contributions to the business world, Christensen is one of the world’s most sought after advisors and speakers, with regular speaking engagements with the world’s biggest and best companies. Friday’s convocation presents a unique opportunity for the SUU and southern Utah communities to glean insight from the very best at no charge.

Christensen will focus the special convocation at SUU in discussion of his business
theories; whereas, his formal Commencement speech to be delivered that evening will be tailored specifically to SUU’s Class of 2011 graduates.

Christensen’s book, “The Innovator’s Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great
Firms to Fail,” introduces the concept of what Christensen calls “disruptive innovation” – ideas or products so revolutionary they turn their industries upside-down.

In addition to the business world, Christensen has also applied his ideas on disruptive innovation to the world of education and to modern health care systems, in “Disrupting Class” and “The Innovator’s Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Health Care.”

In “Disrupting Class,” Christensen draws on his extensive experience in the academic world, where he has spent the last several years as a professor at the Harvard Business School.

For “The Innovator’s Prescription,” Christensen uses his extensive, though perhaps
unwelcome, experience with the American medical system. In less than a three-year span, Christensen survived a heart attack his doctor’s referred to as “the widow maker”; conquered cancer that spawned a tumor the size of a football; and recovered from a stroke that initially disrupted his ability to speak clearly. From such experiences, he has devoted much time and thought to the betterment of the nation’s healthcare system.

Christensen’s broad perspectives provide something for everyone – leading insight from one of the world’s very best.

Christensen’s speech will end in time for faculty and staff to line up for Southern Utah University’s Commencement ceremonies by 3:30 p.m. For guests and friends of the University, the ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Centrum Arena.
