Beyond the tailgating and football games of Southern Utah University’s upcoming Homecoming celebration is a lesser-known tradition that, though relatively new, has proven itself one of the weekend’s highlights for the past seven years. Held the morning of game day, the SUUper Sorrel 5k has fast established ground as a great way to kick off a day of celebration in SUU’s sake.

The race averages 150 runners each year. Among this year’s runners, will be the new Thor the Thunderbird, following a public unveiling of Thor’s new look the evening before.

Adding a bit more excitement this year as well, is the SUU ROTC. This is the ROTC’s first year helping SUU Alumni host the race, and they have committed to bring the ROTC cannon this year to help open the race in grand fashion.

The 2012 race will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, and has just one aim: bring alumni, students and Thunderbird fans together. The race, sponsored by the SUU ROTC and SUU Alumni Relations, is a great excuse to work a little fitness into a weekend full of festivities—all open to the community at large.

It is also one of the least expensive organized races you will find, particularly if you take advantage of early bird registration, which runs through September 17. Students can race for just $10 and non-students just $15. Registration will then remain open through 7:15 a.m. on race day, though prices will increase by $5 per person.

Registration includes a t-shirt and fruit for each runner on race day. Local businesses have also donated prizes, to be used in a drawing for all participants. The overall winner will also receive a Walmart gift card.

Any leftover funds, beyond race expenses, generated from this year’s race will be contributed to the SUU ROTC Club.

Participants may register for the SUUper Sorrel 5k online, at suu.edu/business/rotc/rotc5k.html, or on campus, at the ROTC offices in the lower level of the Technology Building.
