It’s Oscar season in Tinseltown and though a slight departure from the red carpet of Hollywood, SUU is preparing to honor its own resident superstars in the annual Thunderbird Awards ceremony this spring.

A uniquely SUU tradition, the formal Oscar-style Thunderbird Awards showcase the University’s standouts each year, recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of students, faculty, staff and community members.

This year’s Thunderbird Awards ceremony is set to take place on Saturday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theatre on Main Street. Before winners are announced, however, nominations must be submitted. This is where you come in.

Each year, nominations are accepted from members of the campus community who wish to formally recognize those individuals who have made exceptional contributions throughout the academic year. Awards are granted for excellence in eleven different categories; professor of the year, organization of the year and contributors of the year are among the most prestigious awards given. Nominations for the 2013 Thunderbird Awards will be accepted through Friday, March 1.

Nominations may be submitted online at suu.edu/ss/tbirdawards, where a comprehensive list of categories can be found. Eligibility requirements and other nomination guidelines are listed, as well as instructions for nominees.

Once nominated, individuals compete in up to two rounds of judging by committees of students, faculty and staff.

The Thunderbird Awards have been a special part of SUU’s campus life since 1950. Each year, faculty, staff and students alike eagerly await this end-of-year celebration that highlights the university’s most outstanding assets.
