New Scholarship targets Science Students in NeedMarch 06, 2013
Southern Utah University is excited to announce a new scholarship opportunity for its science students, funded by the National Science Foundation and specifically targeting students within SUU’s College of Science and Engineering.
The Scholarship-Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S-STEM) scholarship will help fund the education of 15 SUU students who demonstrate financial need as well as academic talent in the pure sciences: biology/zoology/botany, chemistry, engineering, geology or mathematics. Though not required of all applicants, preference will be given to first-generation college students and those who plan to attend graduate school. Pre-professional students and those with an emphasis in education will not be considered.
Mathematics professor Jana Lunt, principal investigator for the grant, says the college is hopeful that the funding will help talented students focus on their schoolwork above all else.
“There are many SUU students who are very academically gifted but spend their evenings working,” Lunt explained. “Students who receive these scholarships will be able to concentrate on their coursework and supplemental research that can help them reach their highest academic potential.”
Lunt also hopes that this scholarship will give students the support they need to follow through with their education and complete their degrees. “Each year I see so many bright students leave campus because they lack financial support,” she said. “This grant will help stop that pattern.”
S-STEM scholarships are open to all undergraduate students and may be used in conjunction with other scholarships and financial awards.
The amount of each student’s scholarship varies, based upon demonstrated financial need. Funding awards may be renewed each year if the student maintains a minimum GPA of 3.0, attends mandatory seminars and extra-curricular events, and if financial assistance is still deemed necessary.
Those students within the College of Science and Engineering who are interested in applying for an S-STEM Scholarship for next year must do so by April 12, 2013.
