Southern Utah University’s very own “Flippin’ Birds” will host an open gym fundraiser Friday, December 6 to benefit the Gymnastics program, providing one-on-one instruction from SUU gymnastics and coaches for adults ages 18 and above.

Quickly becoming a tradition, these events have proven to be highly popular events allowing students and community members to learn how to jump, bounce, flip and possibly fly using the facilities within the Harris Center for only $5 per person.

Assistant gymnastics coach Kari Louthan said the other two small-scale open gyms the Gymnastics team has previously hosted were a great success and they expect nothing less for Friday’s third installment.

“This is a great way to connect with the athletes, which makes attending the meets more exciting because you know the gymnasts,” said Louthan. “But most importantly, it helps you gain appreciation for the sport, and the hard work and skill required to perform at this high level.”

She added, “Beyond all that, it is just fun and an entertaining way of getting a good workout.”

Louthan also stated that all proceeds from this fundraiser will be used for the teams operational costs, such as new equipment, training needs and travel expenses. Those in attendance may purchase “Flippin’ Bird” t-shirts for a reduced price of $8, that night only.
