Southern Utah University Athletics will hosts its annual Ladies Scholarship Luncheon on Friday, March 7 at 12 p.m. The event brings together people from across the community to help raise funds for women’s athletic scholarships and celebrate the many women within the University’s history who have pioneered women’s athletics.

In its seventh year, the Ladies Scholarship Luncheon raises enough funds to give scholarships to seven female student athletes each year.

All are invited to attend this fundraiser, with the hope to continue to raise support and funds for these Lady T-Birds. The cost to attend is $25 a plate or $250 for a table sponsorships, which gives eight tickets, recognition at the luncheon and a student-athlete will sit with at the table. All proceeds from the luncheon go directly to scholarships for female student athletes.

The Luncheon also plays hosts to a large silent auction with all proceeds benefiting SUU women’s athletics. Items to be auctioned off range from spa packages to gym passes, hot air balloon rides to pieces of art.

That afternoon is also a time to honor Joy Peterson with the Thunderbird Legacy Award. Peterson began teaching at SUU in 1976, where she taught and coached volleyball, softball and basketball, was named coach of the year by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference seven times and led the team to seven consecutive championships. After coaching for 40 years, Peterson was inducted into Utah Sports Hall of Fame and retired from SUU in 2004.

Along with Peterson, the SUU Ladies Scholarship Luncheon will recognize Susie Pedersen with the Thunderbird Enthusiast Award for her support of the SUU athletics and her history has a Thunderbird athlete. Pedersen played basketball, softball and volleyball simultaneously from 1976 to 1980, earning 11-varsity letter and earned all-conference recognition in both basketball and softball.

The Luncheon will also  honor current SUU female athletes and many will be awarded and congratulated for their excellent work, on and off the playing field.
