Professor Deb Snider with her class in the SUU Art GalleryAll who know her adore her and so to many at Southern Utah University it is no surprise that Deb Snider has been chosen as the recipient of yet another award. Snider was selected by her peers to receive the Pacific Region Higher Education Art Educator Award in recognition of her leadership, commitment and service to education in the arts.

The National Art Education Association is divided into four geographical regions: Eastern, Western, Southwestern, and Pacific and Snider was selected as the sole recipient for higher education in the Pacific region, which includes all pacific coast states as well as Alberta, American Samoa, Guam, and the Yukon Territory.

In the Department of Art and Design, Snider’s classes are some of the most popular and educators and artists around the state seek her expertise and advice. A local celebrity, she is frequently invited to teach, speak, judge and perform at local, regional and statewide events.

When asked about where she finds her passion, Snider replied, “I love my students. It is so thrilling to me to teach a general education art class where most of the students are not art majors, but have felt like at some point in their life there has been a creative spark that they want to revive and then during class to see in their eyes this light bulb go off, a spark of passion, an unleashing of creativity — to me, that is thrilling.”

Snider has thousands of students in whom she has invested in a personal way. She says she finds the ultimate satisfaction in watching their artistic and creative growth as they work through their educations. Her passion for art and love for her students has been truly admirable and has caught the attention of the national spotlight.

In March, Snider will travel to New Orleans, Louisiana to be recognized in front of thousands of educators from across the country. “I’m speechless,” she says, “I am very humbled to be chosen. What an honor this is to represent SUU on a national playing field!”
