SUU Celebrates 119 Years During Founders Week

 SUU Celebrates 119 Years During Founders WeekSouthern Utah University will honor 119 years of history during the annual Founders Celebration from March 21 to March 24. Events range from a movie screening to a formal recognition dinner and are open to students, faculty, staff and the community.

The week starts on Monday with Profiles of Happiness: Founders to Future a community discussion of happiness at 11:30 a.m. in the Starlight Room in the Sharwan Smith Student Center. Continuing the theme of happiness, two screenings of The Happy Movie will be held in the Sharwan Smith Theatre at 2:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.

On Tuesday, March 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. students have the chance to meet alumni as they tell stories of SUU’s founding during Lunch on the Main. The event takes place all over campus, with different food at each of the six locations - Old Main, Sharwan Smith Student Center, Centurium, Old Sorrel, Library Plaza, and the Gerald R. Sherratt Library lobby.

Tuesday afternoon the Veterans Resource and Support Center will host a grand re-opening at 4:00 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Center Rotunda.

The Howard R. Driggs Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Ken Adelman, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Arms Control Director for Ronald Reagan on Wednesday, March 23 at noon. Adelman will share his personal experiences during President Reagan’s term with his talk Leadership Lessons from the Master - Ronald Reagan. The Convocation will be held in the Gilbert Great Hall of the Hunter Conference Center.

The week culminates to the final celebration Thursday evening with the Founders Dinner and Awards. Distinguished service awards will be presented to Jeff Bradybaugh, superintendent of Zion National Park, Cindy Line, community arts advocate and Arlene Braithwaite, SUU emeritus art faculty member. Founders citations will be given to Dr. Jon Smith and Professor Lee Byers for their work on the docudrama Back Up the Mountain.
