SUU ceramics art chili saleThe Ceramic Guild for the SUU Department of Art and Design is hosting its Annual Chili Bowl fundraising sale on October 19, 20 and 21. Over 270 handcrafted ceramic bowls will be on sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the SUU Sharwan Smith Living Room. Susan Harris, an acclaimed ceramic artist and SUU professor of art, will be donating a few bowls to the sale as well. All proceeds from the sale support Ceramic Guild members’ attendance at the annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference.

Chili comes free with the purchase of a ceramic bowl. Every ceramic bowl is microwave and dishwasher safe, so you may choose to eat the chili from your new bowl or from a disposable container provided by the Ceramic Guild. With prices ranging from $10 to $25, it is an affordable way to obtain handcrafted art and feed your appetite.

Last year’s annual Chili Bowl allowed five students to attend the NCECA, where the students were enriched with educational experiences and were able to connect with graduate school representatives. Jurors were also on hand to critique the students’ portfolios, allowing them to receive additional feedback on their works of art. Multiple art gallery visits were also included in their conference trip.

Seth York, SUU public administration Masters candidate and the Ceramics Guild president, said, “Last year [at NCECA], we spent hours walking around the various galleries in the area. Going to the student exhibits allowed us to see what other artists are creating. I enjoy the galleries the most because you get so much inspiration.”

The Ceramic Guild has ten students attending NCECA this year, so they are working hard to ensure this year’s Annual Chili Bowl sale is a big success. All sales events hosted by the Ceramic Guild fund educational opportunities for its members and allow visiting artists to come to SUU to teach new techniques.
