Gymnastics Team Sets School Record in Victory Against Denver

The No. 20 Thunderbird gymnastics team set a new school record on Monday night inside the Centrum arena, scoring a 196.700 and defeating the No. 12 Denver Pioneers, who scored a 196.500.
The Thunderbirds surpassed the previous mark of 196.575, which was originally set in 2004 before being matched at the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championships last season.
SUU’s Stacie Webb said she takes a lot of pride in knowing that this group set the school record.
“It’s really special to have that school record because we’ve been fighting with everything we have in our bodies just to get to that point again,” she said. “And it’s really great to know we can get a 196.7 because that means we're one step closer to that 197 mark, which we know we can meet.”
Senior Danielle Ramirez also set a new career high in the all-around with a 39.475, topping her previous mark of 39.450. This puts her fourth all time in SUU school history in the all-around.
“The whole thing just felt amazing, every part of it, and I think as seniors especially we enjoyed it and appreciated how well everyone competed together,” Ramirez said about the meet as a whole.
SUU head coach Scott Bauman said he thinks the team can ride the momentum of this meet into another big score on Friday, they just need to do what they know they’re capable of. He also feels that this team has all kinds of room to improve moving forward into the season.
“We just need to do our gymnastics and we’ve got to build off of the routines in the proper way throughout the lineups,” he said.
The Thunderbirds were led on vault by Webb, who scored a 9.875. As a team SUU scored a 48.975 on vault. This was the only event SUU dipped below the 49.000 mark.
Sydney Townsend hit a career high 9.875 on bars, which Ramirez matched with the same score. As a team SUU hit a 49.225 on the event as a team.
A week removed from struggling on the beam, the Thunderbirds bounced back strong with 49.300 as a team. That mark matched the fourth highest score on beam in Southern Utah history. The Thunderbirds were led by Ramirez and Kamryn Bayer, who both hit a 9.900 on the event. For Ramirez that matched her career high, and for Bayer that set a new one.
The Thunderbirds sealed the deal on floor, as Ramirez hit a career-high 9.925 to lead the way as the T-Birds scored a 49.200 as a team.
The Thunderbirds will gear up to take on Utah State on Friday night at home at 7 p.m.
