In just their first event of the spring the Thunderbird women’s golf team set a new school record for lowest three-round score, as the T-Birds won the Battle at Boulder Creek by shooting a combined 882 (306, 287, 289).
“I think the women’s team came together really well this week,” SUU head coach Richard Church said about the team’s accomplishment. “Their play is a testament to the hard work they put in and the high level of talent they have.”
SUU’s Taylor Viquelia finished on top of the leaderboard, shooting a 72 in the third round to finish the event with a 216 and winning the event.
Poy Prasurtwong was fighting with her teammate for the top spot, as she shot a 70 on Tuesday to finish just one shot behind Viquelia with a 217. She finished second overall at the event.
“It’s great to have a one-two finish with our team captain and a true freshman, and it’s nice to bring home three trophies at once,” SUU assistant coach Sadie Palmer said.
Kyla Smith shot a 74 on the final day of competition to finish with a total of 223. She shot a career-low in the second round with a 70. Her total was good enough to put her in the fifth position in the leaderboard.
Miranda Reyes wrapped up the scoring for the Thunderbirds, shooting a 73 on Tuesday to finish with a total of 228. This mark put her in a tie for 10th at the event.
Nicole Jones finished fifth for SUU and 16th overall with a three-round total of 232.
“All five of the girls in the lineup played incredible this week,” Palmer added. “They all dealt with different levels of adversity, but they all handled it really well.”
Katie Wills was SUU’s top individual at the event, finishing in 30th place after shooting a 246. Lindsay Wood finished in a tie for 34th with a 249, and Ashley Stubbs finished in a tie for 39th with a 256.
South Dakota State finished second at the event, but were 13 shots behind SUU.
The Thunderbirds will be back at it on March 4 when they head to the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Arizona.
