Men's Track and Field Team Hold Number 21 in National Rankings

Track athlete competing indoorsThe Southern Utah University men’s track & field team currently holds No. 21 in the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national rankings.

The No. 21 team finds themselves ranked above No. 22 South Carolina and No. 23 UTEP.

The Thunderbirds have risen 37 places since the start of the season.

In the past few weeks, the Thunderbirds have had some very successful performances.

Early this season, the team competed in Pocatello, Idaho at the Idaho State’s Snake River Open. Frank Harris III broke the school record of 6'11 by reaching a 7' ¼" in the high jump. Jentry Skidmore was successful in the long jump. She placed first overall with a length of 19' 3/4'' and also landed a 2nd in the SUU Record book.

The Thunderbirds then traveled to NAU where Tre James started his streak of record breaking times. James currently holds the school record in the 60-meter with a time of 6.64. He also leads in the 200-meter, alongside Justin Lewis, with a time of 21.18.

The distance runners for Southern Utah University have also been successful this season. Kasey Knevelbaard was awarded his eighth career Big Sky Athlete of The Week award with a record breaking time of 3:55.96 in the mile.

Knevelbaard’s teammate, Mike Tate has also been a tough competitor this season. Tate broke the school record and set the No. 1 time in the NCAA this season in the 5,000-meter at the Husky Classic in Seattle. He ran an epic time of 13:37.33.

Southern Utah is looking to finish out the season strong and will be competing in the Big Sky Indoor National Championships on Feb. 22.
